The First Scraping

Alright, I got to a point in my novel where major first part revisions are now required.  This is all for the better, but man, some of the parts destined for the shredder are really cool.

Unfortunately, they are now unworkable with the new direction.

Question: Has this ever happened to you?

How did this happen?  It seems like that mystique I always heard about is actually true.  Sometimes the story just goes where it wants to go, apart from what you initially planned.  I always thought that was a bunch of pretentious author speak.  Looks like it might not be.

So I say good-bye to some awesomeness in hopes of more awesomer awesomeness…just go with me on that idea :)

  1. Nooooo! Not the shredder, the electronic archive. You never know. Yes, this has happened, once it was everything following chapter 1.

I’m sure you will be so glad when you see the awesomer awesomeness.

  2. Oh yes, this has happened!
I find it reassuring when everything falls into place and I see how all that shredding actually made the whole so much better, aside from letting the story go where it needs to go.

While I have never written anything beyond my own personal imaginings, never shred it save it for something. It will pop up again tweak it and use it!

  3. thanks…I was using the the shredder metaphorically

no… think the best thing would be to take it to the back yard and burn it ala Samuel Johnson style

  4. Nathan
All I want to know is how to achieve the ‘awesomer awesomeness’…. and of course read the whole piece.
    Keep writing!
    Cheers

I usually burn things Sam Adams style. Why do you make me think of beer all the time?
